Modern Fine Bamboo Furniture Is Eco Friendly
By: Frank Solan
21 October, 2010- You might not be familiar with modern fine bamboo furniture, but you soon will be due to its growing popularity and because of its sleek contemporary style, its eco-friendly character, and its sustainability. The tropical look of the traditional rustic cane bamboo might be the only kind of
bamboo furniture that you know about, but it doesn't have the stylish look that you are searching for. You want to buy quality green sustainable furniture with a modern style, and now you can.
To create a smooth solid look of fine furniture the bamboo cane is cut into small narrow strips and then put through a process of grinding the knots down, then the strips are put through a boiling tank to eliminate any insects and prep the bamboo strips for
carbonization. This process includes steam and high pressure infusion of the bamboo which changes the color, like when you heat sugar on the stove it turns darker. The more heat and steam that is injected the darker the color, creating hues from caramel to espresso. A natural color can be achieved by not going through the carbonization process.
Next the strips are kiln dried and then finely planed and bonded together to produce large planks and boards. The strips are glued together and depending on which face is used, the result is either bamboo plywood or vertical grain planks. Then the planks are put through another hydraulic heat press to produce a bond that is stronger than wood. The end results is a beautiful plank of bamboo that can be cut and designed to create a modern stylish fine bamboo furniture.
There are many varieties of bamboo that are used for making durable products. The one most used for its durability is Moso bamboo. The hardness of this type of bamboo is what is amazing about this furniture. Even though bamboo is a grass and not a tree it is actually harder and more durable than oak, and even though it cost a little more it is still comparable with furniture made from other hardwoods like maple, and cherry.
One of the main reasons why people are attracted to this furniture is that it's eco friendly and totally sustainable. Bamboo is faster growing then hardwood trees and can be harvested over and over every 5 – 7 years from the same plant. Once you cut a tree it is gone forever. Bamboo is generally grown organically, without pesticides or fertilizers. And the bamboo plant sequesters more carbon than any other plant on earth, which helps to reduce global warming. Invest in the new modern fine bamboo furniture and enjoy it with good conscience for years to come.
