What is the Focal point of the
Room?
A living room must have a foundation. This foundation comes from
choosing a focal point for the entire layout. This can be an
architectural element like the fireplace. There are other possibilities
as well like a picture window with a fabulous view, a collection of
paintings, an antique rug or an enormous built-in bookcase. You want to
arrange the seating around your focal point, no matter what it is.
Symmetrical settings tend to be more formal than asymmetrical settings,
although there are no hard and fast rules. Try to have one or two other
seating areas. For change in the look, you can rearrange the furniture
twice a year. If you locate your television in your living room, make a
secondary focal point by setting up attractive seating around it.
Colors of Your Living Room
Walls, floors, ceilings and windows are the background for your
furniture. When choosing color schemes, you should also plan for the
adjoining rooms that are openly visible to each other as though they
were one space. Neutrals or pastels are favored by people most of the
time, so you can save the wild colors for bathrooms, basement playrooms
and children rooms. Generally a non-shiny or matte finish is best for
walls and ceilings, while trims should be treated with a shiny or high
gloss finish paint. For floors, always go for warm and friendly with
wood, carpeting, and rugs for casual living. Choose cooler, harder
floorings such as marble and ceramic tile for very formal rooms. Lamps
and light fixtures are accessories which are also great sources for
added color, pattern and texture. Keep lamps that flank a sofa similar
in size, shape and color. Using the identical lamp always can be boring.
Vary lamp shapes and sizes and keep mini-lamps for showcase and
cabinets.
The Finishing Touches of Living Room
Add decorative accents like pillows, an afghan or a quilt to break up
large expanses of solid color in big sofas and large upholstered chairs.
But do not over load a sofa with many pillows so that there is no place
to sit. Instead, make them look beautiful by stashing them in a large,
attractive basket. Hang any artwork or painting at eye-level where it
can be seen with the least effort. Try avoid using family photographs as
these are too intimate for formal living rooms. Candles and flowers add
warmth, light and color to any room. And do not forget to avoid clutter.
